This Is Where It All Began

This is where I found "Buzzsaw," the original sample for my recording "Call Me D-Nice."

The Roots. It's great that you have this pic. You might not have all the pics and archives that you would like from your past, but you have pics like this. Even though it's a present day pic, tit looks like that's the original sign above the store. At least it's not a deli or something else. Right before my maternal grandmother made her transition in 2009, I started a documentary about her life. Thankfully I got her on tape (priceless), but at 80 yrs, she outlived most of the places I wanted to include to tell her story i.e. the dress shop she worked in when she had the tragic fall that left her paralyzed in her early 20s. She was/is a miracle and having some footage to show my children brings her story to life in a profound way.

I know you spent many hours in that store--flipping through 12inch vinyls. CDS can never take the place of that. House of Oldies: An Institution. You gotta go back there when it's open too.

I just loved that track when it came out. Its so nice to follow you and read about how it all started for you. I live in Denmark but went to NYC back in the summer of 90 and 91, and it was the trips of my lifetime. Since then I have been a huge fan of your city and your pictures really gives me that special NY state of mind as I remember from back then. I really enjoy it.

And I became interested in songs like "Buzzsaw" because of classic hip hop tracks like "My Name is D-Nice". Sadly, I don't see nearly as many modern examples of anyone returning the favor to classic hip hop...
