Homeless In New York

Yesterday, I had a conversation with a homeless gentleman. He expressed to me that part of the joy of being homeless on the streets of New York is that it gives him the opportunity to be closer to his friends.

My Mom worked in homeless shelters in the Bronx and Manhanttan and would always tell me about the people who didn't want to leave the streets. They become accustom to that lifestyle and even if they can get help they don't want it.

What a waste of existence...

Sometimes people get fed up with how the world works and check out. I have met homeless lawyers, doctors, accountants, ect. I realize that for some they have mental illnesses like the guy depicted in the soloist. That is the reason that we have to be compassionate non the less because in our daily lives we cannot see what could make a person go that route.

WOW! This photo humbles me. This photo could easily be (my) someone's reality. Makes me appreciate life...and the (little) things that I do have. I've always wondered the story behind homeless people. Each time I pass a homeless person I say to myself "That's someone's child." I love the joy in his face in the second photo.

Thanks for sharing D!

Marlene, I definitely wouldn't say he has a wasted existence. Truth is, he may not be doing a whole lot with his life right now. However, as soon as he has reached his limit, he can quickly make moves to turn exery aspect of his life around. Men and women like that need our love, support and encouragement, not criticism.

Humility and respect are two of the core values of life. Thank you for possessing both...
The freedom that accompanies homelessness is the envy of most people. Homelessness has many dimensions that most cannot recognize or allow themselves reflect upon.
Thanks for sharing .

Nice flix man. I try to talk to everybody on the street. It's nice to hear them. Even when they don't make a hell of a lot of since, if you listen between the lines you get so much more. Your pictures "listen between the lines".
